Food for the brain

Exams is round the corner. Some parents have taken leave to show their children some moral support while they prepare for exams. While doing so, it helps to prepare some nutritious meals to boost your child’s memory and focus abilities.

By now, it’s easy to discover brain-food. Just by doing a quick search on google, we can find a consistent list of food that are always mentioned as brain-boosting. We will not be repeating what have been written before. Rather, let us suggest to you some yummy and nutritious meals to prepare using these brain-boosting food. If you have not before been made aware of these common brain-boosting food, do not fret. We still have them listed for you here.

Eggs

Egg yolks have always been controversial in health articles. Some encourage less of egg yolks due to its high cholesterol. Another school of thought would argue that the cholesterol from egg yolks are actually good cholesterol. Here, we are all for egg yolks. Egg yolks contain Choline that helps to regulate mood and improve memory.

Eggs is a very versatile food that can be used for all meals. For breakfast, eggs can just be served on its own. Some children like boiled eggs while some prefer half-boiled eggs with some black sauce and pepper. Others like scrambled eggs (with a dash of black pepper and salt) that can go with toast.

For lunch, eggs may be used to prepare a sumptuous egg sandwich meal. Preparations is easy – place a slice of cheese on a wholemeal bread, and then place a hot sunny side up on the cheese and finish off with another piece of wholemeal bread on top. The combination of melted cheese and oozing yolk makes the sandwich irresistible even in the middle of intense concentration. Salad can be used for sides for some fibre intake.

For dinner, eggs may be used to cook omelettes. Omelettes can be cooked in a variety of ways depending on the child’s preference. Some children prefer omelette plain, as it is. To make it more flavorful, simply spread some tomato sauce on the omelette. You may also add other ingredients like onions, spring onions, crab meat, ham or cheese to add taste to the omelette.

Eggs may be steamed too! The simplest way to steam eggs is to use a small packet of chicken stocks, mix in with 3 beaten eggs. It is ready for steam. You may sprinkle on some chopped spring onion to add colors to your steam egg dish.

Fatty Fish

Fatty fish contain Omega-3s fatty acids that are great brain-boosting nutrients. Fatty fish can help sharpen memory and improve the mood of children. Two types of popular fish in this category would be salmon and codfish.

Salmon makes a wonderful addition to a nutritious breakfast meal. If you are an adventurous cook, you may attempt to prepare a dish of smoked salmon eggs ben! If done well, smoked salmon is great for breakfast because it is easy to down.

For lunch, you may try steaming codfish in light soy sauce. Codfish is very oily in nature, therefore it is not suitable for frying. Steaming would be the perfect way to prepare codfish. Nothing additional because codfish in itself is strong in its flavor. Remember to add in a few pieces of ginger to reduce the strong fishy smell. Steamed codfish with light soy sauce may be added into plain porridge to make a light meal for lunch.

For dinner, baked salmon makes a great treat. If you can get your hands on some sage (which in itself is a great brain-boosting food and yummy seasoning), you may marinate your salmon with sage, basil, some salt and black pepper. Place the salmon in the oven together with some bell peppers and potatoes. That makes a delightful dinner dish that is not at all time consuming!

Broccoli

Broccoli is a great source of Vitamin K – an oil soluble vitamin that improves cognitive functions. It is not an easy food to down, even for some adults. It is also not an easy food to cook! If overcooked, broccoli changes its color to become more yellowish and tastes bitter. It becomes no longer attractive aesthetically and to the taste bud too. Overcooked broccoli can also be less effective in supplying us with the required nutrients. However, if not cooked enough, broccoli brings a very raw taste that puts off the taste bud as well.

Our recommended way to prepare broccoli would be to cook it with chicken feet broth. Chicken feet has always been known to be a great source of collagen (a must-eat for beauty and cartilage health). However, few of us know that the Glycine found in the collagen in chicken feet can improve sleep and memory for our children! First, simmer chicken feet (add ginger to remove the chicken smell) in a pot of water for about 2 hours to make the broth. At the same time, cut the broccoli into small pieces (huge bouquets of broccoli stalks only make them look harder to down). 5 mins before serving, throw in the broccoli and add in some salt for taste. Broccoli soup in chicken feet broth can be served during lunch together with macaroni for a light meal. Alternative, use the chicken feet stock to cook porridge, and then stir in finely chopped broccoli into the porridge 5 mins before turning off the heat. It is often advised to cook broccoli with meat because the Vitamin K in the broccoli is oil-soluble.

For a dinner dish, try preparing stir-fried beef or pork with broccoli. Again, chop the broccoli to smaller pieces to make them look easier to manage. Also, throw in the broccoli at the last minute so they are not overcooked and retain their fresh green color.

Walnuts

Walnuts are shaped like our brains. The beauty of mother nature is that it gives us the hint of what is good for different parts of our body by creating food that look pretty much like that particular body part. One of such food is wolfberry – that looks like our eyes, and is indeed a great food to improve our vision. Another would be black beans – shaped like our kidney and is itself a kidney tonic.

We can get walnuts and eat them on its own as a snack, or thrown into stir fried spinach (mentioned by some sources to improve mental performance). Another way to get nutrients out of walnuts would be to simmer them in soup. Simply boil some pork ribs (or beef bones) in a pot of water, add in some celery (not widely acclaimed to be a brain-boosting food but mentioned by some), pumpkins (because orange and green makes the soup very attractive and they have complementary taste) and lastly some walnuts. Simmer the soup on low fire for about 2 hours. Serve it with white or brown rice.

Brain-boosting snacks

Blueberries can help improve connectivity among brain cells. They may be eaten on its own as a healthy snack. For those who do not fancy blueberries on its own, try making blueberries muffins for a yummy treat for tea-break! They may also be added into salads as a side dish.

Dark chocolate not only helps mental performance but improves your child’s mood as well! It makes a great break, and helps your child manage his stress and anxiety.

Exercise and Good Sleep

Lastly, exercise and good sleep help the brain retain information more effectively. Encourage your child to get out for some sunshine in the morning, and participate in some outdoor activities. If your child in young, encourage him to go to the playground daily. Do not keep him at home to study just because it is the exams period. Do not stop him from sleeping if he needs to sleep more. With these, we wish you all the best in your child’s exams.

Are the grades of your child getting poor? Is your child losing confidence? If the answer to these questions is “Yes”, then it is the right time to hire a home tutor for your child.

When it comes to understanding the concepts or getting knowledge, your child needs to build confidence. If it doesn’t happen grades will come down and ultimately the confidence. A one-stop solution to all these issues is home tuition. The ultimate way by which learning can be made faster, better, and easier for grabbing knowledge is home tuition. A home tutor will give your child the attention, devotion, and clarity that he or she is unable to get at school.

Before you hire a home tutor…

Before you start finding the tutor, make sure that the tutor and your child are in sync with each other. The tutor must understand the goals of your child.

Don’t expect the tutor to be the jack of all trades. In other words, one tutor can’t be an expert in all subjects. So if your child needs help in Math or science, then an experienced Maths or Science teacher will be suitable for them.

Besides this, you must set clear expectations for both your child and the tutor. This should include academic growth as well as behavioral expectations like following directions along with a better understanding of all the concepts.

The most important thing that you must understand is that your child will have to put in the effort with the home tutor since an alone tutor won’t be able to do miracles.

Top 10 Benefits of Home Tuition

Personalized attention

With home tuition, your child gets that personalized attention that he or she is unable to get in school. Since the tutor has to pay attention to one child, they can maximize the home tuition sessions as per the requirement. Personal attention helps in understanding the strengths & weaknesses and the learning ability of your child. When the tutor has understood your child, they will work accordingly toward their advancement.

Academic Experience

Due to the academic qualification and experience of the tutor, it becomes easy to identify the reasons and areas for the downfall of your child. Then the tutor can work on weak areas and help the child in grasping the concepts faster. An experienced English teacher can understand the areas where the children usually lack and can help with those concepts in a better and easier way.

Study at Convenience

The most important benefit of having a home tutor is that your child will have a compatible study environment. They can study comfortably and conveniently at their home. Home tuition will give your child that environment that is best suited for the interaction between them & their tutor without feeling shy or anxious. This environment is also beneficial for the overall development of your child.

Doubt Clearance

There are chances that your child might hesitate in asking questions while studying in a group, but this will not happen with home tuition. A home tutor will help in getting the doubts cleared in a better and faster way. The quick resolution to the issues will enhance the pace of subject preparation. This will boost the confidence of your child and it will be shown in exam results.

Time-saving

Since your child doesn’t have to go anywhere for getting the tuition, it saves their precious time. They can devote this time in a better way like in revisions and practicing the concepts. This will help in preparing for exams comfortably. With home tuition, you can use your resources in a better way.

Lesser distractions

When studying in a group, several distractions from fellow students lead to paying less attention in class. But in-home tuition, there are no such distractions. The child can pay more attention and understand the concepts quickly.

Development of skills

A home tutor will not only help your child in enhancing the knowledge or grades but also help in developing skills like computational skills, logical reasoning, analytical skills, and comprehension. These skills will help them quickly & correctly answer fundamental questions and perform better in exams.

Boost Confidence

When your child will be able to get a better understanding of concepts with home tuition, then it will help in enhancing their confidence. They will not feel shy & will be able to answer the questions asked by the teacher in the class confidently. When they will be appreciated by the teacher in the class for answering correctly, it will boost their confidence level.

More focused on studies

When your child gets home tuition for the subject in which they are lacking, it gives them a better understanding of the concepts in an easy way. They will not run away from the subject or neglect their studies. Through this, they will pay more attention to the subject and get more focused on it. Slowly and steadily they will be more focused on their studies and they will excel in exams also.

Never-ending Motivation

The motivation that a home tutor provides to your child is never-ending. This inspiration is given by putting in extra effort or maximizing home tuition sessions to make your child understand the topics or concepts in which they are lacking. The home tutor encourages your child at every step along with ensuring no pressure on them.

The Bottom Line

From the above-listed benefits, you might have understood the reasons for finding a tutor for your child when they are lacking behind in the class. The above reasons are enough to ensure that you are not doing anything wrong while hiring a home tutor for your child. You should never hesitate in hiring a tutor if you feel that the tutor will help your child in reaching their potential & promote their learning ability. When you will see advancement not only in academic results but also in the skills of your child, you will never regret your decision of having a home tutor for your child.

In today’s competitive world, there might be fields where your child lacks some skills and for this, you might need a private tuition teacher. Whether your child is jumbling with difficult Maths equations or derivations of Science or has lost in a haze of grammatical rules, a tuition teacher will be a great help for enhancing the skills & grades of your child. Though you might find help from any home tuition agency in Singapore, you must know how you can choose the right tuition teacher for your child.

Things to keep in mind for choosing a right tuition teacher

Before starting your search for the perfect private tuition teacher for your child, you must keep in mind the following things:

Understand your goals

This includes asking things yourself or the school teacher of your child like:

Why your child needs a tutor- Try to access the reasons behind the requirement of a home tutor.

Level of help needed- You must know how much your child needs help in enhancing their skills.

Knowing the learning style of your child- Know whether your child learns more by listening, reading, or writing. Also understand his interests, whether lots of nurturing is needed, and whether he can perform better with men or women.

Time & money that you can devote to tuition- Here you need to be honest with yourself so that you can do the best for your child.

Explore the options

The options that you can explore to find the best home tuition agency in Singapore for a child can be

Online research- You can try to find online the available home tutors in your area.

Asking your friends or neighbors- You can find a tutor by asking your friends and neighbors whether they know any good tutor.

Consulting your child’s school teacher- Another way of finding a home tutor is to contact the school teacher of your child. Since some teachers also take home tuition they can guide you in this matter.

Ask other parents- You can also get references from the parents of your child’s classmates for the home tutor. This way will enhance the chances of getting an already tested and tried teacher.

Know the payment policies

Finding a private tuition teacher is not an easy task as it needs time & money. When it comes to payment, never rule out the option of costly tutors as they can also be good teachers. When searching for a tutor ask things like:

Mode of payment- Know the mode of payment whether it’s online or in cash

Cancellation charges- If you want to discontinue the tuition, then what charges do you have to pay or do you just need to inform the tutor?

Understand the tutor properly

This can be done by asking several things like:

Tutoring methods used by teacher- Understand the methods the teacher is using like audiovisual or just the traditional method.

Expectations from parents-Ask the teacher what they expect from the parents like their support & coordination along with trust.

Availability hours- Check the availability of both your child and the tutor.

Study resources- Check the way of making notes and teaching sessions more productive by the teacher.

Time is taken for preparing the lessons- Ask the teacher the time that your child will take in understanding the lesson whether it’s less or more.

Way of evaluating the needs of the students- Find how the teacher is going to access the weakness or strengths of your child.

Teaching experience of the teacher- Find how much experience the tutor has.

Educational background of the tutor- Know the academic qualifications of the tutor.

Try to contact previous students- Ask for references so that you can know what you are choosing is right.

Way of assessing the progress of the child- Know the ways by which the tutor is going to assess the performance of your child like by providing assignments, weekly tests or monthly tests etc.

The Bottom Line

Indeed a home tutor can help in bringing exponential growth in the academic results of your child. Besides this, a tutor also helps in building an environment that facilitates in boosting the confidence and skills of your child. Finding a tutor for your child is not an easy task to accomplish. Time, effort, and money all are involved along with the future of your child so it becomes a very crucial decision. You just need to focus on these factors and you will surely be able to find the right home tutor for your child. Apart from that you can also request for a tutor at eduaid.

Teaching private tuition in Singapore is a lucrative career. For the past few years, there has been a growing demand for private tutors in Singapore, driven by COVID-19’s disruption of face-to-face schooling and the rise of home-based learning.

Many parents discover the many benefits of home tuition, including having learning objectives tailored to their child’s learning needs and direct access to a home tutor who can clarify their children’s questions, ensuring their academic performance stays on track.

Although the private tuition industry in Singapore is flourishing, it’s also a competitive market. And for a good reason: successful home tutors know how to tap into each student’s potential and accelerate their learning to achieve good academic performance. Parents are willing to pay top dollar for home tutors with a proven track record.

What is the secret to being a successful home tutor in Singapore? Building a good relationship with your student is key. Not all students are enthusiastic about entering your lesson for the first time. Some of them might feel resentful, restless, or even fearful. This is because you are a stranger to them and do not have any relationship with them (yet).

Here are three important factors a home tutor should take note of to build positive relationships with their students.

Trust

To help students learn, a home tutor will need to construct a space and secure climate conducive to students’ learning. It is essential to foster a trusting relationship with the students. Students need to know that you care about them as individuals and are committed to helping them succeed academically.

Students should be able to ask questions, clarify misconceptions, make mistakes or express any concerns or doubts about their learning with their home tutors. Remember that mistakes and questions are opportunities for learning. If you are overly critical of your student’s mistakes during the private tuition sessions, they may become defensive and unwilling to expose their lack of knowledge.

When giving students feedback, avoid using an accusatory tone of blame by not using the word “you”. Instead, use “I” focused sentences. For example, say something like: “I am concerned that you were not paying attention when I was teaching. Now we need to go through the steps again.” This will help you share your feelings and action steps with the student.

Positive Mindset

As a home tutor in Singapore, giving private tuition is about building human connections. Think about your time in school—did you best listen and learn from teachers with whom you had a connection and positive relationships?

To achieve this, home tutors must put themselves in a positive frame of mind and remind themselves that all students are coachable and can improve if given the proper guidance and support. Believe that you are the engine to initiate positive change in a child’s educational path.

Recognise the effort put in by the student and celebrate improvements as small wins instead of focusing only on the result. View mistakes as helpful errors in learning instead of a reflection of the student’s incompetence or personality, for example, acknowledging that it was “a careless mistake” instead of “a careless student”. Be less judgmental and more encouraging.

Home tutors with positive mindsets are less likely to develop conflicts with their students, preserving the good relationship between them.

Credibility

Credibility measures how much students believe they can learn from you and that you can be counted on to help achieve their academic goals through your private tuition sessions. Students need to have confidence and faith in your ability to teach them effectively.

Establish credibility by knowing the subject matter well and articulating the lesson materials clearly to your students. It’s important to be fully prepared before tutoring sessions, such as understanding the material and being familiar with the explanation of concepts.

Excellent home tutors in Singapore deliver teaching instructions that are coherent, flowing logically and organised – explaining the basic concept before moving on to more complex ones. They are also good at pacing their lessons, so students can digest the material presented and have time to ask questions.

Students in secondary schools or junior colleges in Singapore can discern whether a home tutor is well-prepared or simply wasting their time. They are also able to spot inaccuracies in teaching materials. Remember, excellent tutors respect every minute of the student’s time.

Being credible shows your students that you are an expert in your subject and can teach well. This is crucial for building a successful tutor-student relationship.

Conclusion

To succeed as a private tutor in Singapore, you need more than just academic qualifications. Home tutors in Singapore who can charge a premium rate with a booked-out schedule spend time cultivating good teacher-student relationships. They understand this is the key to motivating students to learn and perform better.

It is a joyous time for parents in Singapore when their little one is ready to move from the familiar and secure preschool environment to the more intensive and structured primary school environment. It is a milestone that marks the beginning of an exciting journey into formal education in Singapore. It can also be an unnerving experience for children and parents alike as new routines, school environment, friends, teachers, and expectations are thrust upon them.

Do you know that a child’s experiences during this transition period will have a lasting impact on their future academic progress & adaptability to the education system in Singapore? A child will be more likely to be able to enjoy school if he or she can adapt well academically, socially and emotionally.

To ensure a smooth transition, parents must understand what to expect and know how best to support their child during this process. Here are some critical tips for parents to help their child transit successfully to primary school life in Singapore.

Help your child to be independent and responsible.

Imagine walking in an unfamiliar school canteen with hundreds of other students ordering and carrying snacks and drinks in their hands. Your child wants to buy food but doesn’t know how.

This is an example of a new routine in primary school. Other new tasks include making their way to and fro the toilet within a larger school compound, packing their school bag according to the timetable, managing their homework and spelling schedule and home-based learning tasks deadlines.

Parents can help by training their children and creating ample opportunities to handle the tasks independently. Instead of helping your child to pack his school bag, spend time helping him or her to read the timetable and tick off items in a checklist that he or she needs to bring to school, for instance, a snack box, money and wallet and storybook.

Guide them to order and purchase their food, including counting change, carrying the food without spillage and returning the utensils. Let your child experience independent task completion in an unsupervised setting to gain confidence.

Build a good foundation in literacy and numeracy

As your child moves to primary school, the emphasis shifts from learning through play and exploration to a more formal educational approach. A strong foundation in literacy and numeracy will give your child an advantage in learning these subjects compared to their peers.

How do you give your child the edge needed for formal education? While it is true that your child’s primary school teachers will help them understand mathematical concepts and learn how to read and write. Being able to grasp Mathematics concepts quickly and having adequate competency in English and Mother Tongue can boost your child’s confidence in their academic ability. With one less area to worry about, this reduces their stress during the transition to primary school.

This is why Singapore parents will engage home tutors for home tuition to conduct primary one preparatory lessons. Designed to give your child a head start, these classes introduce topics and concepts taught in primary one; an English home tutor will teach grammar and sentence writing, while a Mathematics home tutor will help your child build number sense and solve problem sums.

Help enhance your child’s social skills.

While home tuition can help strengthen your child’s academic competencies, strong parental support is needed as your children cope with the new social-emotional dynamic in primary school. Your child must learn to interact with peers, teachers, and other adults outside the home environment. Good relationships with teachers and friends help your child feel secure and supported at school, which enhances their learning. It is essential that you help to build your child’s social skills.

Help your child develop and foster positive friendships by attending activities such as playdates, sports, and educational activities outside school. These experiences will help your child develop important social skills such as sharing, cooperation, negotiation and observing social cues such as the body language of others.

Model positive social behaviour for your child, such as friendliness by greeting others, and communication skills, such as listening to others before responding. Be the role model for your child to look up to and emulate.

Work out an arrangement with other parents so their friends can come over for a playdate with parental supervision. You may also consult a home tutor in Singapore to provide guidance to build your child’s social skills based on their experiences with other students.

Conclusion

Primary school is a big transition for any child, and proper preparation is essential to ensure the smoothest possible experience. Send positive messages that school is a fun place to make friends and gain knowledge.

If this information strikes a chord and you are looking for a professional home tutor in Singapore to help with the transition, get in touch with us for home tuition sessions to kick-start your child’s formal schooling journey.

The school year is just around the corner, which means new opportunities and challenges for your child as he progresses to the next academic level. As your child looks ahead to the new year, now is an excellent time to set clear and attainable goals to ensure good academic performance, besides having a home tuition teacher in Singapore.

It sounds intuitive, but goal setting is more beneficial than helping your child stay on track. Goal setting can lead to increased motivation and improved performance. It empowers your child to take charge of their learning and develop a sense of autonomy over what they want to achieve. More importantly, goal setting instills values such as long-term planning, commitment, and effort to achieve them.

Benefits of goal setting

There is a multitude of benefits when students set their own academic goals. These include:

Greater sense of well-being

Motivates the student despite setbacks

Helps students explore different strategies for success

Gives direction and focus

Increases GPA by 30% after participating in a goal-setting programme

Sitting down with your child to set goals for the upcoming academic year can make a real difference in their success inside and outside the classroom. Before diving into goal setting with your child, learning the different types of goals is essential.

What are the different kinds of goals?

Outcome goals

We typically think of outcome goals when we hear “goals.” These goals are results-focused and specific. Goal achievement is attained through competition with others, such as being the top student in mathematics or winning a writing competition. Since students are not in control of the performance of others, they have less control over the attainment of outcome goals.

Performance goals

Performance goals are specific measures of a student’s performance, such as improving their science score by 10% or achieving AL1 for the English Language. In this type of goal setting, students use their abilities as a starting point instead of competing against others. Such goals give students greater control over their success than outcome goals.

Process goals

Instead of an outcome, process goals are task and behavioral-focused, which relies solely on individual action, for example, spending 30 minutes every day learning new English vocabulary words or completing three Chinese practice papers weekly. Process goals are concrete steps to achieve our outcome goals. Students have complete control over the process goals they set for themselves.

Strategies for setting goals

Follow these strategies to help your children set academic goals at the right level of challenge.

Use the SMART goal strategy

You’ve probably heard of the SMART goal strategy, but if you haven’t, SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-bound. This framework is practical because it ensures that the goals meet all criteria for evaluating their success.

Help your child define their goals in each of these categories, and you’ll be well on your way to goal-setting success. The goal should be clear and concise. For example, rather than, “I want to do better in school,” your child could say, “I want to improve my math marks by 10%.”

Next, there should be a way to measure progress toward the goal for the whole academic year. For instance, track your child’s maths practice work at the beginning, mid and end of the year.

Let your child decide the subjects they want to focus on and the areas they want to improve.

Brainstorm with your child

Brainstorm the steps and actions required to accomplish the goals from January to December. Break down the goals into smaller, more manageable steps for your child to keep progressing even when things get tough. This will help your child stay on track and keep moving forward with their goals, increasing their accountability and commitment to accomplishing those goals.

Help your child to organise the goals visually

After the goals are set, get your child to write and organize them visually using a graphic organiser; this will help them remember their goals and stay motivated to achieve them. Remember to display the plans where your child will see them often, for example, on the fridge or in their bedroom.

Goal setting is a great way to help your child focus on what they want to achieve and develop a plan for how to get there. By using the SMART goal strategy, brainstorming with your child, and helping them to write and organise their goals visually, you can set your child up for excellence.

Remember to be supportive and encouraging throughout the process; your child will be well on their way to achieving their goals.

Conclusion

If your child is facing learning difficulties and you struggle to discuss academic goals with him, consider engaging a private tuition agency in Singapore for specialised help.

Besides helping your child with schoolwork, an experienced home tuition teacher in Singapore can act as a coach or mentor to motivate and help your child. Contact a Singapore home tuition agency if you are wondering where to engage a reliable and committed home tutor.

MOE schools in Singapore are out for a well-deserved break. All primary, secondary and junior college students can finally enjoy some time off from the hustle and bustle of school life.

However, this does not mean they can completely relax and do nothing during the holiday. Parents should encourage their children to complete school holiday projects and catch up on their private tuition homework as much as possible. It’s clear that with no teachers monitoring and chasing students to submit their assignments, increased screen time, plus the year-end vacation season, there is a chance that barely any work would get completed.

This can be detrimental to the child’s learning progress, especially if they need to sit for a national examination (such as PSLE, O, or A levels) next year. Motivation is necessary to spur them on during the holiday, besides having regular home tuition sessions in Singapore!

Why is motivation important?

According to research published by Singapore’s MOE, students are less likely to value or invest effort in school when their motivation is driven by external reasons, for instance, rewards, punishments, or guilt.

The study was conducted among over 7000 secondary school students in Singapore. The findings were in line with international evidence- that students’ motivation directly affects their learning outcomes and long-term success in school. Self-driven students spent more time on homework and revision and achieved better grades.

It is essential to help students find the right motivation to perform better in school. If they are motivated for external reasons, their learning outcomes will likely be poorer.

So how can parents help to increase their children’s motivation to do school work during the holidays? Here are some tips:

Find out how your child feels about his homework.

It’s important to figure out how your child feels about homework to devise effective strategies to help him. Lack of motivation can arise from your child dreading or not feeling confident about his work. Try sitting down with your child and finding out how he feels about his homework.

Does your child find the assignment too much or too challenging? Do they dislike certain subjects and are reluctant to complete the work? Or is your child simply procrastinating due to the holidays? Try to be objective and don’t create a situation where the child feels like he’s being grilled.

If you still can’t identify any specific reason for your child’s lack of motivation after talking, it might be a good idea to consult his school or private tuition teacher.

Teach your child to prioritise holiday activities and schedule his time

It’s easy for students to get caught up in the holiday mood and want to do nothing but play all day.

Sit down with your child and help him plan out his holiday. This step includes creating a time management matrix and a table to categorise the different activities that are urgent and important, urgent but not necessary, not urgent but important, and not urgent and unnecessary.

This approach will help your child understand that some things are more crucial than others, and he should prioritise these activities. Next, let your child come up with their school holiday schedule, which should include time for homework, relaxation & recreation, reading, sports or other tasks he wishes to do. These are life-long skills that will prove to be helpful in the future.

Minimise distractions in your child’s study area

Distraction is not just a problem for adults; children also find it hard to concentrate when things around them catch their attention.

Most Singapore parents will set aside a dedicated space in their home for their children’s private tuition sessions or study time. Help your child create a conducive study environment by decluttering his study area and keeping only the essentials such as books, stationery and materials needed for homework.

Numerous studies, including one documented at SLATE, reveal that students tend to multitask, such as surfing social media, while completing their schoolwork. This makes their learning shallower and lacking in quality than if they had given their work full attention.

The research also reveals that students understand less of their schoolwork and have more difficulty transferring their learning to new contexts when they multitask. As such, it is essential to have device-free zones in the house during study periods, limit screen time and ensure good lighting to help minimise distractions.

Conclusion

If a child is not motivated to complete his homework, he is likely to produce poorer results. If your child attends private tuition in Singapore, consult the home tutor for strategies to motivate your child to excel in his studies. Dedicated one-to-one private tuition lessons are effective in increasing your child’s academic progress within a shorter time frame, making him feel more competent in a subject and motivated to do well in school.

Your child has received his year-end report book and you’re delighted with the results. Does this mean that your child is set for success? Not necessarily.

While home tuition is known to help children bolster their academic performance in Singapore, it is important to meet with your child’s home tutor to assess how well home tuition has been working for your child. It is also an excellent opportunity to express your observations or concerns to the tutor and decide on a plan for the following academic year.

Here are 4 ways to prepare for a meaningful conversation with your home tutor about your child’s academic performance in Singapore:

Gather Feedback and Concerns from Your Child

Although most Singapore students might be shy about giving feedback, it is crucial to gather their concerns as a first step.

First, you’ll want to understand how your child generally feels about home tuition. Ask them what they like or dislike about the tutoring sessions. Would they like to continue the sessions with the tutor next year? Are there any issues to clarify with the home tutor? Try to listen carefully and reason with your child’s feedback. Note down some critical points that you can bring up with the tutor.

Recent research published in neuroscience and cognitive psychology found that students learn best in a safe and supportive environment that fosters a strong sense of security and trust. It is essential that your child feel comfortable and connect well with the tutor. Home tuition in Singapore doesn’t have to be a ‘tug of war’.

Review Your Child’s Tuition Materials and Work

Perhaps you’ve been busy with work and haven’t had the time to sit down and review your child’s tuition materials or worksheets. Try to set some time aside to review them. Take note of specific topics your child did well or needs more help on, and compare the tuition materials with your child’s Singapore school work and examination papers. Did the home tutor cover similar topics in the syllabus, or were the materials too easy or difficult for your child?

Also, note whether the tutor used materials from different resources, not just from the same assessment books. This approach will diversify and deepen your child’s learning and understanding of the topics.

Prepare a List of Questions to Ask and Pre-empt the Home Tutor

Although this is not a common practice for home tuition in Singapore, schedule a parent-teacher meeting with your child’s home tutor.

Prepare a list of questions and points you wish to raise with the tutor so you don’t miss out on anything important. Send a copy of this list to the tutor in advance. This will give the tutor sufficient time to objectively prepare and address each point.

It would be helpful to provide the tutor with a copy of your child’s school report book and feedback from your child’s year-end parent-teacher (PTM) meeting.

During the actual discussion, try to be respectful, open and friendly as possible. Avoid abrasive language like “You didn’t cover this” or “This is too hard for my child.” Instead, reframe the questions in a more positive tone. For example, “Could we please spend more time on topic X next year?” or “I feel that my child is struggling with Chemistry. Can we review his understanding of the basic concepts?”.

Set reasonable goals for the next academic year

If you intend to continue your child’s home tuition with the same tutor next year, it would be helpful to set reasonable goals together for the next academic year in Singapore. This approach will ensure that both parties are on the same page and work towards a common goal.

Discuss goals your child has for next year and how the tutor can help achieve them through concrete steps. Perhaps your child wants to score higher in Mathematics or improve his confidence in oral examinations. If your child wishes to enhance his composition grades, the tutor could start a weekly journal writing exercise with your child.

Conclusion

A good Singapore home tutor can significantly impact your child’s academic performance and future success. Do not be surprised if the tutor understands your child’s studying or personal habits well enough to advise how you can help them at home. Good tutors build a climate of trust with your child to enhance their learning. If the tutor is experienced, they would have also taught enough students to know what strategies work better.

Some parents engage a home tutor because their child requires extra care or attention, whereas some do so to give their children a competitive edge over others. Regardless of your reasons for hiring home tutors in Singapore, your child will benefit significantly from their help.

Check out our guide on how to ensure you select the most suitable one for your child.

If your child is taking their O Level examinations, you may consider hiring a home tuition agency in Singapore to help them prepare. When it comes to education, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Every child learns differently, and as a result, each family must find the educational approach that best suits their needs. For some families, that means enrolling their children in a traditional brick-and-mortar school.

For others, it means hiring a private tutor. And for many families, the best option is to work with a home tuition agency. But with so many agencies to choose from, how can you be sure you’re picking the right one? Below are a few factors to put into consideration to ensure you get the best home tuition in Singapore.

Examination Subject Scope

It’s important to make sure that the home tuition agency you’re considering specializes in the subjects your child will be taking their examinations in. Not all agencies offer tutoring in all subjects, so it’s important to find one that covers the ones you’re looking for. This is because, while all students are unique, each subject has its own peculiarities that require a different approach.

A good way to determine whether an agency is a great fit for your child is to ask for a free trial lesson. This will give you an opportunity to see how the agency works and how your child responds to their teaching methods. If you’re not satisfied with the results of the trial lesson, it’s best to look elsewhere. There are plenty of reputable agencies out there that will be very willing to help your child succeed.

Tutor Qualifications

As any student knows, O Levels are a crucial part of the educational process. Not only do they provide a solid foundation for further studies, but they also help to determine which colleges and universities you can apply to.

As a result, it’s essential to make sure you’re getting the best possible tutoring for your child’s O Levels. When choosing a tutor for your child, be sure to ask about their experience teaching students who are taking their O Levels. It’s also important to make sure they’re familiar with the examination format and content.

An effortless way to do this is by asking for references or speaking to other parents who have used the agency before. You want to be sure that your child is getting the best possible home tuition in Singapore; hence it’s important to hire a qualified and experienced home tuition agency.

Read reviews of different agencies

Parents entrust their children to home tuition agencies with the hope of providing them with a better education. But with so many agencies to choose from, how can you ensure you’re making the right choice?

One way to research agencies is to read online reviews. Make sure to read a variety of reviews, from different sources if possible, to get a well-rounded view of an agency. Beware of fake reviews, which can sometimes be posted by the agency itself in an attempt to boost its reputation.

Also take into account the reviewer’s biases; for example, a displeased ex-employee is likely to have a more negative view than a satisfied parent. But if you take the time to read reviews carefully, they can give you valuable insights into an agency’s strengths and weaknesses.

Pricing

Parents want all the best for their children and will go the extra mile ensuring that their children are getting the best education possible. Engaging a home tuition agency can be very beneficial in ensuring that children are receiving quality one-on-one instruction.

When looking for a home tuition agency in Singapore, parents should ensure that they get a detailed list of all fees upfront. Some agencies may charge an enrollment fee, while others may charge a per-lesson fee.

Some agencies may also charge a materials fee, so it is important to ask about all potential fees before making a decision. By getting a complete list of all fees, parents can be sure that they are choosing the right home tuition agency for their child’s needs and that there are no surprises down the road.

Budget

While it is tempting to go for the cheapest option, this may not always be the best choice. Instead, look for an agency that offers a good value for money.

Compare prices and services to find an agency that comfortably fits within your budget and also provides the level of tuition you are looking for. With a little bit of research, you can find an affordable home tuition agency in Singapore that will help your child succeed.

Understand your child’s needs

As a parent, you definitely want what’s best for your child. So when it comes to their education, you want to make sure they’re getting the best possible tuition. But how can you ensure that the home tuition agency you’re hiring is right for your child’s needs?

First, it’s important to understand what your child’s specific needs are. Are they struggling with a particular subject? Do they need extra help to catch up with their classmates? Once you know what your child needs, you can start looking for an agency that specializes in that area.

It’s also important to consider your child’s learning style. Some children learn best through interactive activities, while others prefer a more traditional approach. Make sure to ask the agency about their teaching methods and whether they’re a good fit for your child.

Given the importance of education, it is no surprise that parents are increasingly turning to home tuition agencies to give their children a leg up.

If your child is taking their O Level examinations in Singapore, hiring a home tuition agency can give them the extra support they need to succeed. After all, additional support can make a very huge difference when it comes to exams.

However, with so many agencies available, it can be difficult to know where to start. By considering all these factors, you can be confident that you’re choosing the right home tuition agency for your child.

Singapore is a predominantly English-speaking country, with over 80% of the population using English as the primary language in our daily life. Given that Chinese is one of the academic subjects taught in Singapore schools, it is understandable that many parents will turn to Chinese tuition to improve their primary school child’s grades.

It is a tedious uphill climb of the “Great Mandarin Wall” for parents to get their children to master the language if mandarin is not spoken at home.

English is now the world’s common language with a deep embedment in youth’s popular media such as pop culture, media and literature. It is harder for Singapore’s children today to learn Chinese than students in the past.

As Asian parents, we know the distinct advantages of effectively bilingual children: more promising career prospects in large economies such as China or Taiwan when they eventually enter the workforce.

Here are four ideas if you are looking for ways to improve your primary school child’s Chinese language during the school holidays.

Participate in Immersive and Fun Chinese Holiday Activities

While most Singapore parents will enrol their children in sports camps or STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) enrichment programmes, the year-end school holiday is an excellent opportunity to increase your child’s exposure and appreciation of the Chinese language.

The Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan offers Chinese language improvement and enrichment programmes for preschool and primary school children. You can also consider immersive Chinese holiday day camps curated by Singapore Chinese Language Centres, incorporating interactive formats such as story-telling, arts and drama, and field trips to stimulate your child’s interest in the language.

Engage a Good Quality Chinese Home Tutor in Singapore

Hiring a Chinese home tutor can help address your child’s specific Chinese language learning needs and bridge gaps in their language understanding. The Singapore MOE year-end school holiday offers the best opportunity to focus and learn with a home tutor because your child is not distracted by learning the syllabus in school.

Good quality and experienced home tutors can adapt their teaching methods according to your child’s learning style; they’ll give undivided attention and coaching to help your child progress in their Chinese language.

This can be a “life-saving solution” if your family is a monolingual household with no one with whom the child can consult for Chinese learning. Perhaps your child is struggling with the subject in school or is taking PSLE next year- it is advisable to start her on primary school Chinese tuition during the holidays as some language skills take time to develop, such as composition writing and learning Chinese vocabulary words.

You can always consult with a home tuition agency in Singapore, where an experienced coordinator will understand your requirements to find tutors for your selection at no cost.

Give Reward to Increase Consumption of Chinese Language Media at Home

Nothing beats self-motivation and a good home environment when it comes to learning. Just like how you incentivize your child to do well in school with a reward, the same concept can be applied to their Chinese language studies at home.

Reward your child with their favourite snacks or extra playtime for speaking in mandarin or reading several pages of Chinese language books. Surround your child with Chinese language media in your home environment. These could include story books, comics, magazines, YouTube videos, local channel 8 drama and news, audiobooks, songs, and even learning applications. You can also start with bilingual materials to slowly ease their acceptance.

Remember to keep the resources age-appropriate and exciting for your child, as they are more likely to engage with them.

Include the Chinese Language in Your Family Life

A vital social aspect to improving languages is evident when a child gets ample opportunities to hear and speak a language in a natural environment. Create opportunities at home for your child to use mandarin daily. For example, you could start using more mandarin when communicating with them at home or assign a parent to use only mandarin when talking to them.

You may also increase the fun factor by having mandarin family games night, such as Chinese charades, playing Guess-Who or taboo in Mandarin, or organising a family scavenger hunt in Chinese. Alternatively, gather a few parents and organise a few sessions of primary school Chinese tuition learning programme at home. This will expose your child to other like-minded children who are enthusiastic about learning the Chinese language, providing them with an excellent opportunity to socialise and have fun while picking up the language.

Conclusion

It’s never too late to start brushing up on your child’s Chinese language. Besides Chinese tuition, there are some fun and interactive ways to help your primary school child improve their Chinese.

Make use of the school holiday to build your child’s confidence in the language and they’ll head back to school with a refreshed interest and greater motivation to excel in their Chinese language.

If you’re looking for Chinese language tuition to help your primary school child but need help knowing where to start, contact a reputable home tuition agency in Singapore for a free consultation. Chinese is like any other language, best learned through practice in a fun and enjoyable setting. So go ahead and give some of these methods a try.
